…on In Darkness aka W ciemności.
Story of a Ukrainian sewer worker who uses his city’s sewers to hide a dozen Jewish refugees as their ghetto is liquidated. The director mines the claustrophobic setting for great effect, with light ricochets and noises piercing through the silent darkness. Severe, but not totally bleak, it makes the viewer feel on edge feel the situation. The lead did strong work, enough that he makes you uncomfortable having him as your protagonist as he seesaws between selfless and selfish decisions. Based on a true story, it had one of the most depressing post-scripts I can remember.
